CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Joe Davis homered during a four-run eighth inning, and Houston beat Purdue 8-4 on Sunday in the NCAA Tournament.
Tyler Bielamowicz and Grayson Padgett had back-to-back RBI triples during the big inning that helped the third-seeded Cougars (38-24) earn a rematch with top-seeded North Carolina, the site host and No. 6 national seed, in the championship round with Houston needing two wins to advance to the super regionals.
Davis led off the inning with a tiebreaking homer to right off Ross Learnard. Cooper Coldiron hit a one-out double and scored on Landon Etzel’s run-scoring single, and Etzel scored on Bielamowicz’s triple that made it 7-4. Padgett followed with his triple to give Houston a four-run lead.
Jacson McGowan and Ben Nisle each homered for the second-seeded Boilermakers (38-21), with Nisle’s two-run shot in the fifth putting Purdue up 4-0.
