It was disturbing to read this commentary, arguing against the expansion of Medicaid. At their annual national assembly recently, the Catholic Health Association unveiled a public awareness campaign, “Medicaid Makes It Possible” to highlight the need for expanded Medicaid services, and to demonstrate the extent to which Medicaid is such a necessary component of American health care today.
The public is largely unaware of the reach of Medicaid, and of the consequences of reducing those benefits, the association felt.
Waldman’s essential argument is, why do we need to expand Medicaid when our country is blessed with emergency rooms, which are required by law to provide care for those who are uninsured or under-insured. Simply present yourself at the emergency room, receive treatment, walk away and the problem goes away, he indicated.
