A Christmas ornament designed and created in Odessa proudly hangs inside the state Capitol this Christmas season. State Rep. Brooks Landgraf and his wife Shelby placed the ornament on the 23-foot, Texas-grown Christmas tree, which stands in the Texas House of Representatives chamber.
Each year, Landgraf is given one ornament to be decorated in the district and to represent the Permian Basin on the Texas House of Representatives’ Christmas tree. Edna Krueger, a talented Odessa artist, designed and painted the ornament this year to pay tribute to hardworking West Texas ranch families. Kruger painted a scene of West Texas cowboys rounding up young calves around the glass ball ornament. A blue and red band surrounds the top and bottom to represent the Texas flag, while copper stars symbolize the lone star. The sun on the horizon may either be rising or setting, as ranch work days are long. Finally, small seed beads are woven into the rope encircling the ornament. The ornament will be on display in the house chamber at the Texas Capitol in Austin through Jan. 2, 2018.
